Welcome to Whittier
Our Whittier location is open May-September.
To enter or exit the city of Whittier you will have to travel through A Controlled One-Lane Tunnel with alternating train and vehicle use. To view the schedule please visit: http://tunnel.alaska.gov/schedule.shtml
We are located at Lot 3 Whittier Small Boat Harbor in a RED and WHITE trailer next to the Frisky Mermaid Café & Gifts. Our local hours are 8am-5pm. However, we are generally there by 7am on busy rental days. We are not always in the trailer, but our phone number is on the door or guests can go into the Frisky Mermaid and someone there can help them.
Below on the map you can see the two cruise terminals circled in relation to our office noted by the STAR.
The self service gas station is noted by the Yellow Arrow.
The Chugach Glacier Gateway Terminal is about 2 miles away. There is a shuttle to/from the terminal $10 per person.
The Princess Holland America Terminal is less the ¼ mile. Easy walk – no shuttle available.
We recommend for PICK UP/CHECK OUT guests to send one person via shuttle or walk to our office – pick up the car and drive car back to terminal to pick up the rest of their party and luggage.
DROP OFF GUESTS should drive to the terminal, drop luggage off then come to AVIS to pick drop off the vehicle. They can catch the shuttle or walk back to terminal.
With only 190 people, it’s easy to dismiss Whittier as a small town yet the million visitors each year see the natural beauty and scenery is worth the trek. There are quirky weather changes in Whittier, where one day it snows the next could be a beautiful sunny day, only to rain a few hours later.

Popular half-day trip
Lots of visitors begin by heading down to the Seward Sealife Center. Then, go up to Girdwood to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see moose, caribou, elk, musk oxen, bison, bears, and more. Head up to Anchorage on the scenic Seward Highway. You’ll be ready for your flight by the late afternoon. If you have a full day, add Kenai to the itinerary before coming up to Girdwood.
