This historical mine is still producing gold and if you're lucky you might just strike gold while sifting through the dirt.
Head Out of Town to See the Famous Aurora Borealis - The Northern Lights
Aurora Borealis, also known as the famous Northern Lights is a natural phenomenon that occurs each year around March. The show is a spectacular event that takes place miles above the surface of the earth; purple, green, blue and red colors swirl and ripple in front of your eye. This spectacle is best enjoyed away from the city lights. It is a must-see and do for every visitor to the north and well worth the wait as it might take a few days for getting a clear view.
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race – With dog-mushing being Alaska's official sport it is no wonder that the annually held Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in March is a popular tourist attraction for all ages. Watch as the mushers handle their dogs to perfection while they race on the trail. Getting to and from the track is easy. Drive down Joe Reddington Road in Wasilla to see the Iditarod Trail Headquarters. If you like you can also take a stroll along the famous trail or even take a sled ride with any number of tour operators offering summer and winter trips. Visit the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race website for more information.
Flattop Mountain Trail – If you want the best of both worlds then a hike along Flattop Mountain Trail is a must-do. From high above the city you get the best view of Mt. McKinley and Mt Redoubt on clear days. The scenery is spectacular and well worth the trip. The hike takes 2 hours and is rated a moderate difficulty.
