About Haines

Haines is a quaint town situated along the upper Lynn Canal that gained notoriety during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s. The population of the area dwindled significantly after the gold rush died out, but this didn’t change the stunning pristine beauty of the surrounding region in the century since.

These days, Haines has a population of less than 2,000 residents. Haines is approximately 87 road miles from the Alaskan capital, Juneau. However, it is 775 miles drive from Anchorage, or 650 miles from Fairbanks.

Tourists have amazing opportunities to enjoy so many outdoor adventure activities in this largely untouched region.

Haines is also renowned for the abundance of wildlife in the area – including right in the downtown area. From October through to February each year, Haines is the home to the largest gathering of Bald Eagles anywhere in the world.

Haines is a popular stopping point for the many cruise ships that pass by in the summer months, during which the very long summer days allow visitors to the area plenty of time to enjoy their activities without the sun setting.

While in Haines, it is easy to notice the distinct white buildings of Fort William H. Seward, which were built in 1902. William H. Seward was responsible for the purchase of Alaska from Russia. These landmark building are now operated as homes, accommodations, restaurants, galleries, shops and of course our Avis rentals counter inside Hotel Halsingland.
